Goinââ¬â¢ Cholita Essay Essay Example for Free
Goinââ¬â¢ Cholita Essay Essay Goinââ¬â¢ Gangsta, Choosinââ¬â¢ Cholita, by Nell Bernstein, is claiming identity and describing how the youth in certain parts of the country are choosing their preferred identity rather than accepting their own. For example, in Bernsteins essay a girl named April, living in California, wants to be Mexican; therefore, she dresses like and attempts to talk in the same accent as a true Mexican, even though she is Anglo. I agree with Bernstein that people are influenced by what they see and hear. April portrays a perfect ââ¬Å"cholita,â⬠with her ââ¬Å"dark lipstick,â⬠ââ¬Å"even darker lip liner,â⬠and ââ¬Å"baggy pants, blue plaid Pendleton and her bangs pulled back tight off her forehead. â⬠I also believe, like Bernstein, that people claim only part of their ethnicity to fit in. Even though April looks and acts like a Cholita she is of ââ¬Å"Angloâ⬠descent. The essay also specifically talks about the state of California, where all this identity changing is happening due to the great diversity of race here. Bernstein claims that this is a positive situation when youths choose an identity other than their own identity. Whatever makes them feel better or boosts their self-esteem is okay, I guess? However, they still have to face the facts; they cannot change their identity. I do not know what dictionary Bernstein is reading, but the definition of identity does not include the word appearance. Identity is who a person is, not who they appear to be. Nell Bernstein does a very good job in describing the ââ¬Å"glamour,â⬠associated with race. It seems, there is always a particular culture that many people want to be associated with and hang around. In the case of Goinââ¬â¢ Gangsta, Choosinââ¬â¢ Cholita Bernstein talks about how teens choose and define their identity, what ââ¬Å"claiming,â⬠an ethnic identity is, and what the concept of ââ¬Å"cityâ⬠is according to these teens. Bernstein explains that as time goes by the suburbs are becoming more diverse, and people in the suburbs have become infatuated with the ââ¬Å"city lifeâ⬠. The glamour of this may be media-generated. We come from a society that pushed for the concept of ââ¬Å"white is right,â⬠for such a long time that now there are backlashes from other cultures, races, and minorities. Many great strives have been made by various ethnic groups. Accomplished actors and actresses of these ethnic cultures make most often these strive for all to see because of the glamour and prestige that they hold in Hollywood. Actresses such as Jennifer Lopez, and Halle Berry are most often credited with moving ahead both women, and those of Latino and African descent. Men such as Denzel Washington and John Leguizamo are very well respected actors in the field as well. With the success of these role models, as well as the acceptance of diversity has become many ââ¬Å"Caucasianâ⬠students are now being rejected. Many of the relatives and ancestors had to fight very hard for their rights and this may be why many younger generations want to be like them because they can identify with them and also because of how ââ¬Å"glamorousâ⬠their lives seemed, and because of portrayal in the media. They ââ¬Å"claimâ⬠these cultures to be accepted and more respected. Actually many generations of these cultures do press the importance of filial piety (respect for their elders), deep within their cultures as opposed to those of Caucasian families who viewed by other cultures, do not know ââ¬Å"theirâ⬠place. Because of the emphasis on heritage of the quickly populating cultures in their areas, many feel they do not belong. Because of this nuclear family as opposed to multi-generational, many cultures could clash. Glamorous is a life where everyone else belongs because of how he or she looks or what ancestor they have which entitles them to prestige, finally because of the long awaited freedom and hardships that they had to endure to get there. Embrace your family; you are one of us if you are in any group of people. Look at movies like The Godfather. Italian-Americans involved with the Mafia worked hard for family to be able to provide for them, but were also caught up in some bad stuff. Italians/ Italian-Americans who ran around shooting on behalf of who they were, as well as against those of the same culture that was at odds with them. It seemed like a very glamorous life even though those involved would say that it was far from it. Many cultures today or those who want to be involved in these cultures, adorn themselves with stereotypes and simply to be accepted, as Bernstein states, ââ¬Å"they are very young but may not understand the full comprehension of all that was involved, it may be the influence of being tough, bad, and able to bounce back with a greater force that these teens look for. â⬠They are at a very young age and are still growing. The ability to take on these preset identities (stereotypes) may feel that it helps them find out who they are because adolescence is a very unsure time. The ability to fit-in such as school, friends, and communities also play a very critical role in the development of an adolescent. Many kids who are raised in the suburbs now a days feel as if they have to choose a ââ¬Å"crewâ⬠to hang around. Even the white kids do not feel safe in their own streets unless they are hanging with the bad crew. Kids feel the need to choose what group they belong to based on the way they dress, what music they listen to, and whom they see as a role model figure. Kids should not be forced at such a young age to claim something they are not. Children should be proud of the race they originally are. With the growing amount of races becoming more diverse in not only in the suburbs but around the world, it is important for parents to enforce the values of nationality. The author made it very important to write this article in order to show people the truth behind color. Although it may be easier for a child to join a group and feel accepted, they should also know that they would not truly be accepted until they accept themselves. Cultures are becoming more and more diverse. Although culture is constantly changing, people should not change their personal values in order to feel accepted. In conclusion, I feel the media does play a role in stereotyping these cultures and making them seem more glamorous, but the actual families of those from the actual cultures (Latino, African, etc. ) stress the importance of filial piety. This respect for ancestors joined with expectations and role models in the media can make this seem more glamorous. Adolescents that are trying to find out who they are in a very critical time in their lives often fall back onto this because identity already seems ââ¬Å"preset,â⬠and is easier to follow that finding out one for their self. Many Caucasian teens are being ridiculed because of what they are and history, so they often desperately pull from what they know to be able to fit in better and not be ridiculed as much, but more accepted. With cultures melting together today and many marriages creating children of various backgrounds, it can be very confusing for children of these higher populated states to find out who they are. The glamorous look may come from the comradely that these cultures have for members within. It may be looked at as glamorous because of the popularity of its members or even how it is shown in the media, but it is most glamorous for those who are not of the decent because they finally have a place to belong among those who accept them because of it.

Honor and the Celtic Heroes Essay -- Irish Myths
The honor-code within the Mabinogi, The Tain, and Gantzââ¬â¢s Early Irish Myths and Sagas underlines the ethos of the traditional Celtic hero. Yet, the compliance of the honor-code could be better observed as serving the identity and reputation of the hero rather than a deeper code of morality as it might suggest. The gae bolga, Efnisien, Miderââ¬â¢s love for Etain, and Rhiannonââ¬â¢s magic bag are all instruments of unworldly power, making the impossible possible for each of the heroes. It is because of these supernatural influences that the heroes are both blessed and cursed by powerââ¬â¢s perfection. The compliance to the honor-code plays less a role in truly enabling the hero and yet itââ¬â¢s essential in the development of the heroââ¬â¢s identity and reputation among his allies and enemies. Within The Tain, the warrior Cuchulainn is characterized as a flawless hero, destined to die young. Cuchulainnââ¬â¢s honor to Ulster could easily be measured by the uncountable number of warriors heââ¬â¢s killed with his various skills and gae bolga, yet the killing of his only son Connla and his Foster-brother Ferdia proves to be his most difficult and heroic task. Despite Emerââ¬â¢s plea for Cuchulainn to spare his only son, Cuchulainn provokes the boy to fight him, using his gae bolga to kill him. Cuchulainnââ¬â¢s honor to Ulster through the sacrifice of his son not only grieves him, but all the men of Ulster. (The Tain, p.45) Tragically, the boy expresses the essence of a warriorââ¬â¢s honor to the men of Ulster and to Cuchulainn in obeying his wishes to refuse no man in combat (The Tain, p.33). The boy bids his farewell to the men of Ulster saying, ââ¬Å"If only I had five years among you I would slaughter the warriors of the world for you. . . (The Mabinogi, p.38) And his honor in not talking or sleeping with Arawnââ¬â¢s wife earns him an enduring friendship, gaining him otherworld treasures and the kingship of Annwfn. (The Mabinogi, p.41-42) Even when his wife Rhiannonââ¬â¢s child is abducted and everyone wants him to divorce his wife, he loves her and seeââ¬â¢s no fault in her, letting the teachers and men of wisdom decided her punishment. (The Mabinogi, p.51) Underlining all of the heroes of the Celtic stories is how human they are. Even Taliesin, the divinely inspired poet did not become who he was without stealing the three drops of wisdom. (The Mabinogi, p.163) The Celtic stories not only depict their successes and failures in warfare, discernment, and love, but also their painful sacrifices in attempting to keep the admiration and trust of their kingdoms. The Debilitating Effects of Tv on Children
Subject: ââ¬Å"The Debilitating Effects of TV on Childrenâ⬠Topic: u02d2 The Debilitating Effects of TV on Children Author: Dolores Staggs Date: October 18, 2012 1:15 AM J. Grohol (2009, September 9) ââ¬Å"The Debilitating Effects of TV on Childrenâ⬠The main arguments that the author is making are:TV can be very detrimental to the mental development of children and teenagers. And that it should only be allowed in moderation. Not ââ¬Å"whenever they wantâ⬠and ââ¬Å"as much as they want. â⬠The main purpose of this article is: To show that Americans watch way too much TV and are raising their children in the same manner.Oblivious to its negative effects on their child's development. The evidence or facts the author uses in this article to support their arguments are: Researchers at Columbia's College of Physicians and Surgeons concluded in 2007, for example, that 14-year-olds who watched one or more hours of television daily ââ¬Å"were at elevated risk for po or homework completion, negative attitudes toward school, poor grades, and long-term academic failure. â⬠Those who watched three or more hours a day were at even greater risk for ââ¬Å"subsequent attention and learning difficulties,â⬠and were the least likely to go to college. The main conclusion[s]/inference[s] in this article are: Kids who watch TV are more likely to smoke, to be overweight, to suffer from sleep difficulties, and have other health risk. And are less likely to be successful. No child under age two should watch television at all, the Academy of American Pediatrics advised in 1998. The main assumptions underlying the authorââ¬â¢s thinking are: Most parents tend to use TV as a babysitter and do not monitor or care what their kids watch regardless of the future consequences. Life Is Precious - 1350 Words
Life Is Precious It has been argued that it should be made legal for patients to have doctor-assisted suicide, or mercy-killing, which is the term used to describe ending life through the voluntary self-administration of lethal medication, expressly prescribed by a physician for that purpose (DHS-Internet). By approximately a two-to-one ratio, most adults in the US agree that it should be this way. When read a brief description of the Oregon proposition, allowing physician-assisted suicide for patients who are thought to have less than six months to live, a 61% to 34% majority said that they would favor such a law in their state(Harris # 2). However, I myself feel, that it shouldnt be approved for several reasons: this matter doesâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦However, in reviewing the lives of people whose suicides have been publicly linked to Dr. Jack Kevorkian, a pathologist who has been behind bars since 1999, serving 10 to 25 years for second-degree murder, at least 60% of the 47 suicide patie nts were not terminal. At least 17 of them could have lived in definitively and 13 had no complaint of pain and in at least five of those cases, the people who died had histories of severe depression (Freep Ãâ" internet). Dr. Kevorkian argues that every assisted-suicide candidate underwent extensive counseling with himself before hand, but it was found that counseling was often limited to phone calls and brief meetings that included family members and friends (Free press- internet). There should be some requirements for the process of doctor-assisted suicide, for instance, every candidate for assisted suicide must be examined by a psychiatrist. But it was found that there was no psychiatric exam in at least 19 Kevorkian cases, including several in which friends or family reported that the patient was despondent over matters other than health (Free Press Ãâ" Internet). In addition, he adds that before agreeing to assist a suicide he used to make a detailed review of each patients medical records, but it was found that Kevorkians access to such records varied widely; in some instances, he received only a brief summary of the attending physicians prognosisShow MoreRelatedLife Is A Precious Thing Essay1165 Words à |à 5 PagesLife is a precious thing. Ethics And Integrity Of Enron - 769 Words
Most companies pride themselves on their business model and ethics to help make them successful. Ethics and Integrity are two things all companies should practice and promote. When Enron was first developed that is what they set out to do, but things quickly took a turn for the worst. The name Enron is now synonymous with fraud, in one of the biggest Wall Street scandals in history. In 1985 Enron was conceived by two gas companies merging together in Houston, TX. The company began to boom in the late 90ââ¬â¢s as they were part of the dot.com era. Enron launched their broadband services as well as Enron Online. Forbes named them ââ¬Å"Americaââ¬â¢s Most Innovative Companyâ⬠for six years straight. By 2000, Enron shares reached an all-time high of $90, propelling them to the 6th largest company (NPR, 2016). By 2001, the company started to show some cracks in their faà §ade. Enron reported a large loss of $618 million as a quarterly loss (CBC, 2006). With such a large and sudden loss, an investigation was launched by the U.S. Securities and Exchange commission. This was a shock to the public as just a year before the stock was trading at $90/share and now, it was under one dollar a share. By December of 2001, Enron filed for bankruptcy. When the company began to show cracks, their secrets were beginning to unravel. The company was not reporting any of its losses from the past several years. Fishing in the Land of 10,000 Lakes free essay sample
Fishing has been a staple in Minnesota since as long as one can remember, due to the large amount of lakes, 11,842 to be precise (Lakes, Rivers, and Wetlands Facts). There are over 40 lakes within 20 miles of Park Rapids with various species of fish (Hubbard County Minnesota Lakes Park Rapids Lakes Fishing). The fact that most of these lakes donââ¬â¢t have a selective harvest keeps Park Rapids from reaching its full potential economically. Many people travel 2 or more hours to get to Red Lake or Lake of the Woods to fish because the selective harvest put on the lakes has increased the fish population. But these areas are protected by Wetland Laws that keeps them from building on the land and developing recreational activities (Dokken). Unlike the Park Rapids area, which has golf courses, restaurants, hotels and movie theaters to entertain people when the fish arenââ¬â¢t biting. Many people like to fish, but not all day long. Having amenities such as the ones in Park Rapids, attracts many people the way it is. If great fishing was added to that list, a whole new population of tourism would come as well. The local businessââ¬â¢ make quite a bit of money in the summer, but the opportunity to make more is one simple law away from them doing so, by putting a selective harvest on the fish. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) already protects the walleyes by allowing you to only keep 4 walleyes per day with a possession limit of 6 walleyes, per person (Adjust regulations). This helps by not letting anglers go out and keep as many fish as they want, but it does not help with the size they keep. Most people I have talked to about adding a selective harvest are unfamiliar with the subject unless they have been to Red Lake, Minnesota or to the Rainy River in Minnesota. A selective harvest means that people cannot keep just anything they catch. For example, Red Lakeââ¬â¢s slot size right now on walleye is three fish per person under seventeen inches or two fish under seventeen inches and one of any size (Red Lake Ice Fishing Upper Red Ice House Rentals Fishing Reports Red Lake, Minnesota). What this does is allows the fish over seventeen inches to have a better chance of being released and lay eggs in the spring. There is also a selective harvest on northern pike on Red Lake as well. This is not just to allow the population of fish to grow but is also there to increase the number of trophy northerns in the lake. The slot on northerns is twenty-six to forty-four inch northerns must be released, but you can keep three under twenty-six inches with one over forty-four inches (Red Lake Ice Fishing . . . Minnesota). Just like most fish, the bigger the fish the more eggs it lays. By allowing the bigger fish to be released and lay eggs the fish population grows greatly. Another way to create a larger fish population is to stock the lakes with fry, which is tiny fish about the size of a mosquito that they put in lakes in hopes of reaching at least 14 inches within 3 years of being released (Stock Fish). The only problem with this is that it can be very expensive to do. Red Lake had three major stocking events in 1999, 2001, and 2003 (Dokken, Brad). Each of these events was estimated to have cost $68,000 (ââ¬Å"Red Lake Restocking Effortsâ⬠). It could be a possibility, but it would be very hard to come up with that amount of money in one community the size of Park Rapids. We believe the best way to acquire better fishing is to put a selective harvest on the fish. We sat down with Hendri Ernst, owner of Smokey Hills Outdoor Store, the second largest dealer of Ice Castle Fish Houses, and asked him for his opinion on a selective harvest around Park Rapids. While talking to him he said: I believe a selective harvest could make a big impact on the economy. It has to be researched and done correctly according to each lake. But if everything is done well and the selective harvest works, we could see a lot more sales and a new population of tourism. This would help out with selling bait, fishing supplies, and possibly more Ice Castle Fish Houses as well. This would be in the winter as well as summer. Once again, it has to be researched and done correctly but could make a big impact on the economy. (Ernst, Hendri) In order to get people to come back to Park Rapids for fishing, we must first give them a great fishing experience. There are many different ways to get a great fishing experience; from paying a guide to take you out, to traveling to the best lake, or by researching different ways to catch the fish you are after. I would say most people travel to the best lake in order to catch fish. I believe that the Park Rapids Area in Minnesota could be one of the best fishing destinations by adding a selective harvest to its lakes. Some lakes and rivers such as Red Lake or the Rainy River have selective harvests (ââ¬Å"Adjusted Regulationsâ⬠). The Rainy River established a selective harvest in 1994 to try and recover from being overfished (Spring Walleye Assessment on the Rainy River: Minnesota DNR). Since then, the walleye population has recovered greatly and allowed people to fish for trophy fish while also keeping some good eaters. The average catch has increased from one walleye every four and a half hours to one every one and a half hours (ââ¬Å"Adjusted Regulationsâ⬠). This is just one of many success stories that Minnesota has had with selective harvests. If we put a selective harvest on the lakes around Park Rapids, we could increase the amount of fish in each lake. By doing this more and more anglers will come to Park Rapids when they hear about the great fishing. Red Lake and Lake of the Woods has people from all over Minnesota come up to fish for walleyes. A lot of those people are from Minneapolis, St. Paul, or suburbs of the Twin Cities. In order to get to Red Lake a lot of these people will travel through Park Rapids anyway, so why donââ¬â¢t they stop? Because the fishing in the Park Rapids area is not as good as Red Lake or Lake of the Woods. The first step in implementing a selective harvest is to get the DNR on board with the idea. They would have to do research on the lakes with the technology they have now as well as research that has been done in the past on lakes with a selective harvest. It will not cost any money to implement the selective harvest but may cost some money to do the researching which could be provided by the state. Then the law would have to be passed by the state of Minnesota. Lastly, it would have to be announced to the public through newspapers, social media, and signs near public accesses. Another way to let people know would be to have signs on the highways once you enter the selective harvest zones, these could be made by the art program at Park Rapids Area High School for minimizing costs. The selective harvest would not only affect our environment, but could also give Park Rapids a big economic push as well. The resorts on Red Lake charge anywhere from ten to fifteen dollars to go out of their accesses during the winter due to the fact that they have plows make roads for vehicles to drive on (ââ¬Å"Red Lake . . . Minnesotaâ⬠). The bait shops are full almost all day long, selling bait and groceries. Plus, the motels get full on weekends. Park Rapids has three bait shops that have people come in every now and then to buy bait during the week and only get a little busier on the weekends. We also have three grocery stores that are fairly busy, but could be a lot busier with more fisherman around all year. The hotels in Park Rapids are usually open for more people to come stay, but with people coming to fish they could fill up and get extra money as well. Lastly, most resorts around Park Rapids are closed all winter, which means they make all their money in the summ er. Although, if the fishing around Park Rapids got better, resorts could charge money for people to go out of their accesses in the winter and make some extra cash. Overall, there are many more positives to adding a selective harvest than there are negatives. One of the few negatives would be an increase in pollution around the lakes, but as long as everybody is responsible and cleans up after themselves there wouldnââ¬â¢t be any problems. The outcome of a selective harvest would be an increase in economic growth for Park Rapids and also an increase in the amount of fish in the lakes. This would help out the local businesses and also help the fishermen to catch more fish.
